Testing for autogenous and semiautogenous

This paper reviews current testing methods for sizing autogenous and semiautogenous mills in the North American context with comments on the necessity for test work and requirements for different circuits and equipment selection. The economics of testing and the value received are discussed.

For larger power motors and higher clutch shaft speeds a more thorough analysis of the mill is required.

2018-4-18  A recent calculation on a 30′ diameter, 7000 Hp, semi-autogenous mill indicated that a flat end vs. conical end construction would require a shell weighing 13% more to account for stress alone. Deflection was still better in the conical-ended mill as opposed to the flat-ended mill.

the MacPherson autogenous work index (AWI). A correlation factor is applied to arrive at the index used in the grinding circuit design, when the gross autogenous index is greater than 10.0 kWh/st, because the MacPherson mill becomes less efficient as the ore becomes harder. Both exist to provide a com-mon basis for comparing the power capacities of various designs. By their nature, these are general standards in that they apply for fine pitch gears of

The term autogenous means that grinding media like the steel balls and rods used in some mills are not required. Instead, the tumbling action of the ore in the rotating mills is sufficient to reduce it to a consistency of beach sand. Tilden has twelve primary mills that are 27 feet in diameter and 14 ½ feet long. Further grinding occurs in grinders and pebble mills which also operate autogenously. Grinders and pebble mills

This type of mill is used when the product must be free of metallic contamination. Autogenous mills These mills use coarse ore particles of the material to grind itself. Grinding is by attrition.

2014-7-17  Autogenous mills are the largest in diameter since the feed grinds itself. A semi-autogenous mill uses some metallic or ceramic balls to assist the grinding process and can be slightly smaller. Ball mills are smaller still and use a larger percentage of balls to perform most of the work. Large-di-ameter mills allow for use of gear ratios
